On June 1, 2021, co-founder of The Drake Group, Allen L. Sack was made a permanent voting member of the Board of Directors by unanimous vote of the Board on the following motion:
ALLEN L. SACK
DIRECTOR EMERITUS
WHEREAS, Allen L. Sack with Jon Ericson, co-founded The Drake Group in 1999 during a meeting of a distinguished group of college faculty, authors, and activists gathered for a think tank at Drake University on how to end the academic corruption in college sport;
WHEREAS, Allen L. Sack, then a professor from the University of New Haven, made the motion at that meeting to create a national organization founded on the principles discussed and debated at the conference, with Ericson describing The Drake Group as a national activist organization;
WHEREAS, Allen L. Sack is completing his 21st consecutive year of service in Drake leadership positions that have included service as President from 2012 to 2014, member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, and Chairperson or member of various committees;
WHEREAS, Allen L. Sack is a Professor Emeritus in the college of business at the University of New Haven where he taught for forty-one years, is the former Director of the federally funded Center for Athletes Rights and Education (CARE), has published extensively in scholarly journals, and has presented papers at countless scholarly conferences and written several books; and
WHEREAS, over the past four decades he has been a leader in efforts to protect higher education from the corrupting influence of highly commercialized college sport programs,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors taken on June 1, 2021, that Allen L. Sack is appointed to the lifetime position of Director Emeritus on the The Drake Group Board of Directors to honor his contributions and achievements and express the heartfelt appreciation of the Board.
Dr. Sack earned his a Ph.D. in sociology from Pennsylvania State University and a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame where he played on Ara Parseghian’s 1966 National Championship football team. Dr. Sack is a Professor Emeritus in the college of business at the University of New Haven where he taught for forty-one years. He is the Immediate Past President of the Drake Group, a faculty controlled advocacy organization whose mission is to defend academic integrity in college sports. He also served as the Director of the federally funded Center for Athletes Rights and Education (CARE) in the early 1980s. CARE was co-sponsored by the National Football Players Association and the National Conference of Black Lawyers.
He has published extensively in scholarly journals on topics ranging from soccer and ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, to sport marketing and the role of sport in economic development. He has presented papers at countless scholarly conferences and written several books. Over the past decades he has been a leader in efforts to bring big-time college sport into line with its stated academic mission. Dr. Sack recently met with the U.S. Secretary of Education and others to support a bill proposed by Congressman Jim Moran of Virginia to create a President’s Blue Ribbon Commission on collegiate sports.
As a public intellectual, Dr. Sack has written numerous guest columns and op-ed articles for news papers such as the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Christian Science Monitor, The New York Daily News, The Indianapolis Star, The Hartford Courant, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Inside Higher Education. He has made appearances on shows like Good Morning America, The McNeal Lehrer Report, CNN, The Big Ten Net Work, ESPN Classic, Outside the Lines, and on over one hundred radio networks. His most recent article on college sports appears in Transparency International’s Global Corruption Report.
