Drake Group Begins Aggressive Lobbying Campaign on Behalf of CAP Act

Over a year ago, a team of experts with close affiliations with the Drake Group approached the Drake Group executive committee to get its approval to begin work on a piece of Federal Legislation called the College Athlete Protection Act (CAP Act). The executive committee approved a final draft of the bill in November and in May of this year the final draft was overwhelmingly endorsed by the Drake Group membership.

A team composed of Drake Group members has been aggressively lobbying for a Congressional sponsor. Contacts have been made with the staffs of Senator Murphy and Blumenthal in Connecticut and several Drake Group members met with Connecticut Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro. Discussions are also ongoing with members of congress who have proposed similar legislation “The process is ongoing,” says Drake Group President, Gerald Gurney “and legislation like ours will transform the NCAA into a college athletic association rather than the professional league it has become. In our opinion, federal legislation like the CAP Act is the only reasonable way to ensure academic integrity in college sports and to defend athletes’ welfare.”
